Hyatt Place Essendon Fields [Airport Hotel Review]

Hyatt Place Hotel Essendon Fields - budget hotels near Melbourne Airport

I’ve had my eye on booking a stay at the Hyatt Place Essendon Fields since it opened in late 2017, but favour evening flights so haven’t really had a good reason to.

Finally, the perfect time came when REX launched their new service between Melbourne and Sydney, so I quickly booked in to check out this stylish hotel near Melbourne Airport.

I am not a morning person at the best of times so booking a stay out near Melbourne Tullamarine Airport just made sense. My usual go-to is the Parkroyal Melbourne Airport, just a short walk from the terminal, but with COVID restrictions still in place, many of the closest airport hotels to Melbourne Airport remained shut.

Located just minutes down the road from Melbourne Airport, and with a complimentary airport shuttle, I decided to check-in and check-out the Hyatt Place Essendon Fields.

Checking in: Hyatt Place Essendon Fields

I arrived late in the evening – around 10pm – and the foyer of the Hyatt Place was deserted. Someone must have seen me enter because from near the cafe (adjacent to the check-in desk) I heard a “Hi Ma’am“.

As I waited, I glanced around the slim but comfortable atrium. Fitted with a very contemporary black and white pallete with warm golds and woods, there was a cafe area to my left and some seats near the bank of elevators to my right.

Check-in was speedy and efficient. The team added my Hyatt World number to the account with ease (my booking was made through the Qantas Hotels website so I didn’t have the opportunity to include it when booking), and in less than 5-minutes, I was heading up to my room for the night.

The Room

Entering room 322 I noticed it’s simplicity, but it was fully designed for comfort.

The bed dominates the space; a comfortable queen-sized bed with crisp white linen and a tan leather-bound headboard. While the bed was definitely on the firmer side (Hilton have my favourite beds by far), it was comfortable and I slept easily.

There are stylish matte black light fitting on each side of the bed and sturdy wooden bedside tables.

On the wall opposite the bed is a large sectional lounge. Comfortable and facing the perfect direction to watch the large flatscreen TV.

What I really liked was that they also included a small side table, perfect to use as a laptop table. While there is a workspace in the room, it is nice to have the ability to change up where you are sitting; or have another spot if your partner needs to work too.

There is a closet near the door which includes a small safe (large enough for a laptop but would be uncomfortable to fit a DSLR camera in it), a torch and removable hangers. This may seem insignificant to some but many hotel brands do skimp on this small luxury in order to avoid people stealing them.

If you are peckish, consider grabbing some snacks in the downstairs cafe or BYO. There is a minibar under the desk, but during my visit, there was nothing but a couple of single-serve long-life milk packs.

The bathrooms are sleek, minimalist and overall, unremarkable. They are a great size, so no need to worry about them cramping your style! Basic toiletries are provided.

One thing I do want to note is that there are USB plugs at the desk, not near bed where most people probably want them. A small inconvenience at best though.

The Restaurant

As I arrived late I didn’t get the opportunity to eat at the on-site restaurant or cafe.

There are three options for dining at the Hyatt Place Essendon Fields, depending on the time of day you wish to eat:

  • The Breakfast Bar: Located in the hotel lobby, the Breakfast Bar is the place to fuel up for your day. With continental breakfasts, freshly cooked eggs, fruit, juices and more. Best of all, breakfast is included for all World of Hyatt members! Breakfast begins at 6.30 am daily.
  • The Market: all-day dining is available at The Market. Located in the lobby, enjoy a range of a la carte options, plus the nightly special! You can also pick up Vittoria coffee, pastries, sandwiches, snacks, beer, wine and more to dine in or take away.
  • Mr McCracken Restaurant and Bar: the perfect place to unwind and dine is the on-site restaurant. Whether you want to enjoy a pub-style lunch, hearty dinner, or just have a drink or two, you are bound to find something on the menu to tantalise your taste buds. Most items are made in-house (including their famous 72-hour pizza dough!) so you know it’s gonna taste great!

In-room dining is also available.

Summing Up

Melbourne Airport hotels are expensive and…. well, frankly, the ones closest to the airport are rather lacklustre; but the Hyatt Place Essendon Fields defies expectations.

With comfortable no-fuss hotel rooms that tick all the buttons, and close to Essendon Field’s shopping, food, and entertainment precinct; if you don’t mind taking a short ride on the complimentary airport shuttle, then the Hyatt Place is the best hotel near Melbourne Airport for you!
